The Cadillac trapeze table at Forte Pilates in Los Angeles

What is the Cadillac?

The most versatile apparatus in the studio.

The spring assists. The body learns.

The Cadillac — also called the trapeze table — is a raised table framed by a four-poster canopy of springs, bars, and straps. Joseph Pilates built the original to rehabilitate patients who couldn't yet stand at a reformer. That lineage still defines what the apparatus does best: it meets the body exactly where it is.

Unlike the reformer's moving carriage, the Cadillac's surface is stable. Springs attach from above and below, so resistance can assist a movement rather than resist it. That's what makes spring-assisted range possible — the apparatus carries part of the load while you find the line.

At Forte, the Cadillac appears inside Private and Duet sessions rather than as a separate class. Your instructor moves you between the Cadillac, Reformer, Barrel, and Chair depending on what your body needs that day.

Why the Cadillac

What it's uniquely good for.

  • Spring-assisted range

Overhead springs support the limbs through arcs the body can't yet control alone — building range without strain.

  • Rehab-adjacent work

The stable table and scalable spring load make it well suited to post-injury conditioning and cautious first steps back into movement.

  • Deep, supported stretch

Hanging work and bar-assisted extension open the spine and shoulders in ways mat work can't reach.

  • Instructor precision

Cadillac work at Forte is always 1:1 or 2:1 — every spring change, every cue, calibrated to your body in real time.

How sessions run

A Cadillac session at Forte.

01 · Assess
Your instructor reviews your history and watches how you move. Cadillac work starts from what your body shows, not a set sequence.
02 · Calibrate
Springs are set to assist or challenge — heavier to support, lighter to demand control. The load changes as you do.
03 · Move
Fifty minutes of guided work — roll-downs on the bar, leg springs, hanging stretch — often flowing between Cadillac, Reformer, and Chair.
04 · Carry it home
Your instructor may leave you with one thing to notice between sessions — a breath pattern, a stance, a line.

FAQ

Cadillac questions, answered.

  • The Cadillac (trapeze table) is a stable raised table with a four-poster frame holding springs, bars, and straps. Where the reformer uses a moving carriage, the Cadillac keeps the body supported on a fixed surface while springs assist or resist each movement — which makes it exceptional for range work, controlled strengthening, and deep stretch.
