At Forte Pilates, we see runners of all levels, from those training for their first 5K to seasoned marathoners navigating the hills of Los Angeles. A common thread for many is the familiar, frustrating ache of shin splints. This pain along the tibia is often a signal from the body, a request for attention to the delicate balance of strength, mobility, and impact. The high-repetition, high-impact nature of running can overload the tibialis anterior, the muscle running down the front of the shin, leading to inflammation and pain.

Traditional rest can feel like a setback, and simply stretching may not address the underlying muscular imbalances. This is where the unique environment of the reformer becomes a powerful tool. The carriage's glide allows for controlled, precise movement without the jarring impact of the pavement. It provides a space to unload the stressed tissues while actively rebuilding the supportive musculature of the lower leg, foot, and ankle. The work is not about intensity, but about intention.

1. The Foundation: Understanding the Load

Shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome, often arise from a combination of factors. A sudden increase in mileage, improper footwear, or running on hard surfaces can contribute. But from a movement perspective, we frequently observe a disconnect in the kinetic chain. The foot may not be articulating properly upon landing, the ankle may lack stability, or the deep stabilizing muscles of the lower leg may be under-engaged, forcing the larger, more superficial muscles like the tibialis anterior to work overtime.

The reformer, with its moving carriage and adjustable springs, allows us to isolate and retrain these patterns. The resistance is smooth and consistent, unlike the variable forces of the ground. This controlled environment is where we begin to teach the body a new, more efficient way of bearing load.

2. The Reformer Footwork Sequence

This sequence is designed to be accessible, focusing on mindful connection rather than fatigue. It can be incorporated into a private session or explored within the mindful pace of our small-group reformer classes, where individual attention is always possible.

Heel Presses

Begin with feet in the heels-on-footbar position, a narrower stance than the traditional Pilates V. Inhale to prepare. Exhale to press the carriage out slowly, focusing on pressing through the center of each heel and maintaining a neutral ankle. The goal is to feel the work in the posterior chain, the hamstrings and glutes, while allowing the front of the shin to relax. Inhale to return with control, preventing the carriage from snapping back. This establishes the pattern of driving from the heel and hip, not the shin.

Parallel Arches

Place the balls of the feet on the footbar, heels together, toes apart in a small V. This is a more challenging position for ankle stability. Execute slow, controlled presses, focusing on maintaining the lift of the inner arches. A common tendency is for the ankles to sickle inward or outward; the visual is to keep the ankle bones parallel. This directly strengthens the intrinsic foot muscles and the tibialis posterior, a key stabilizer that supports the arch and offloads the tibialis anterior.

Single Leg Heel Presses

This exercise introduces unilateral stability, crucial for addressing imbalances that can contribute to injury. With one foot placed securely on the shoulder rest, perform heel presses with the other foot. The stationary leg must work to stabilize the pelvis and torso, preventing rotation or hike. Keep the movement range modest, prioritizing control and alignment over distance. Switch sides. The focused work often reveals a notable difference in stability from one side to the other, common in runners.

3. Integrating Cadillac and Barrel Work

While the reformer footwork is central, other apparatus in our studio can further support this rehabilitation focus. The Cadillac, with its push-through bar, is excellent for isolated ankle articulation and dorsiflexion work in a non-weight-bearing position, allowing the tibialis to work without compression. The Spine Corrector or Barrel can be used for gentle calf and anterior tibial stretches that respect the current state of the tissues, promoting length without strain.

Exploring these apparatus options is a natural progression in a private Pilates Los Angeles session, where an instructor can tailor the session precisely to your movement patterns and recovery goals.

##> FOR BEGINNERS: A note on starting. It is perfectly normal to feel unfamiliar muscles engaging during this work. The shaking in the foot or lower leg is often a sign of neuromuscular awakening, not weakness. Focus on the quality of a single, controlled movement rather than the number of repetitions. Communicate with your instructor about any pin-point pain versus muscular fatigue.

4. From the Studio to the Street

The value of this practice is realized when it translates back to your run. The conscious connection to the heel and arch built on the reformer can inform your foot strike. The newfound stability in the ankle can lead to a more aligned leg with each stride. This is not a quick fix, but a recalibration. Consistency in this mindful movement practice can build the resilient foundation that allows for consistent, joyful running.

For runners in the Koreatown and Westlake area looking for a supportive, precision-focused environment to address such specific goals, our studio provides that dedicated space. Our Korean-speaking / Koreatown page has details for our bilingual community.

5. Building a Sustainable Practice

Recovery from shin splints is a process. Integrating one or two focused reformer sessions per week alongside your running schedule can provide the complementary strength work your body needs. Whether in our intimate group reformer classes capped at eight, or in a dedicated private session, the principle remains the same: clean, precise movement creates lasting change.

Before beginning any new exercise regimen for injury recovery, it is prudent to check with your healthcare provider. Once cleared, you can view our current class formats and pricing to find the path that suits your pace. The work is quiet, the results speak for themselves.

(Heel Presses)

(Parallel Arches)

(Single Leg Heel Presses)
